Definition of Sport-Related Concussion

Sports-related concussions are a subtype of  a mild traumatic brain injury. Concussions occur from an external force or blow to the head or body that causes an alteration in neurologic functioning, with impairment in concentration, working memory, and executive functioning. Additional problems that can occur include headaches, insomnia, emotional lability, dizziness, and fatigue 

Concussions are commonly seen in collision sports such as football and soccer. This type of injury can cause cause neurologic dysfunction. Every athlete is different and and recovery time can vary for each athlete, however,  a trained Physical Therapist can assist with recovery time and help prevent prolonged effects of these types of traumatic brain injuries.  Prolonged effects can impair academic and cognitive development. It is estimated that 45 million children and adolescents across the USA participate in organized or recreational sports activities.  Approximately 5-10% of these children and adolescents sustain a sports-related concussion and are treated in the emergency department.   A much  larger number are injured  and are never seen in the emergency department.
